Hepatitis A

Symptoms

·  Tiblackness

·  Muscle Weakness

·  Lack of appetite

·  Diarrhoea

·  Vomiting/font>

·  Jaundice within the first two weeks

How can I catch it?

·  Oral faecal route which includes, contaminated food and water from human sewage, especially shellfish

·  Close person to person contact

·  Contact with primates, such as monkeys

·  Sexual oral and anal contact

What precautions can I take?

·  Initially, where possible, avoid contact

·  Get vaccinated by your GP

·  Wear disposable gloves when dealing with dirty water or faecal matter

·  DO NOT drink water unless you are sure it is safe to drink

·  Wash contaminated skin immediately with soap and water, cover cuts with waterproof plasters

·  All non-sharp waste, which is contaminated with dirty water or faecal matter, should be double bagged into yellow clinical waste bags sealed and labelled.  Except all DNA sticks and intoximeter mouthpieces used in custody areas, which must be placed in sharps bin

·  Mobile breathalyser kit mouth pieces should be placed in the yellow clinical waste bags and returned to station for disposal

·  Contaminated clothing should be removed with disposable gloves.  It should then be double-bagged in yellow clinical waste bags and taken to a dry cleaners or given to the contract laundry service.  This also applies to contaminated bedding, which should then be given to the contract laundry service.
