Bonus Payments

A chief officer may award a payment of between £50 and £500 to a member of his force where he is satisfied that the member concerned has performed a piece of work of an outstanding, demanding, unpleasant or important nature. These payments will be taxable but not pensionable.

Applications for bonus payments should be made by individuals themselves or nominated by a sponsor. All formal applications for bonus payments will be made by completing the standard application form.

To assist the award panel in reaching a determination, information should be provided in the application which clearly explains why the work described is considered to be outstanding, unpleasant, demanding or of an important nature. This is particularly important if the work described is outside the nominee's current role.

Once the application form has been completed by the nominee/sponsor, the form should then be forwarded to the nominee's first line manager who should add any relevant comments. The form will then be forwarded to the Area Commander/Head of Department for further comment.

Completed application forms should e mailed to the Special Priority Payment mailbox. Application forms will be collated by the Chief Superintendent Personnel Services for consideration by the Awarding Panel.

The Awarding Panel consists of members of the Resource Management Group (RMG) together with invited members of the staff associations. The panel will consider all applications, but only applications which comply with the criteria will be eligible for a bonus payment. The level of bonus payment will be determined by the Awarding Panel.

All nominees/sponsors will be informed in writing of the decision made by the Awarding Panel whose decision is final. There is no right of appeal.

The contents of an application form and any other associated documents will be confidential. They should not be disclosed to anyone who is not involved in the process. All documents will be dealt with in accordance with data protection principles.

The Bonus Payment Scheme is subject to external audit and will be reviewed periodically.
