Federation reaction to stop and search statistics

Simon Reed, Vice-Chairman of the Police Federation of England and Wales, says:

“Looking at stop and search statistics in isolation, without putting them into context, is completely meaningless. The statistics alone are based on the general population, not the street population. They do not include the time of day or whether the increase is as a result of specific initiatives or particular legislation being used.

“I expect to see a further increase in the number of stop and searches in the next year. People need to know that they cannot roam the streets freely carrying weapons without fear of being caught. Increasing stop and search is the only sure way of reducing the catalogue of weekly knife crime tragedies.”
