Man charged with stabbing murders in Fulwood, Preston

A man has been charged with the murders of his aunt and grandmother, found stabbed to death in Preston on Monday. Maureen Allen, 79, and her daughter, Geraldine Allen, 57, were found in a burning bungalow in Fulwood. Post-mortem examinations revealed the women, who have yet to be formally identified, died from stab wounds. Lee Browne, 21, of Fulwood, Preston, appeared before Preston magistrates and was remanded to appear before the city's crown court on Friday.

Two men deny thefts from Highland post offices

Two men have gone trial accused of break-ins and thefts from post offices and businesses across the Highlands. John Hind, 54, of Colne, in Lancashire, and Matthew Peters, 40, from Bournemouth, in Dorset, deny stealing £34,497 in cash and £10,508 in stock. They have pleaded not guilty to 18 charges involving raids and attempt raids in Caithness, Sutherland, Ross-shire, Lochaber and Moray. The trial at Wick Sheriff Court in Caithness started on Tuesday.

Extra policing helps prevent repeat of Merseyside riots

Drafting in extra officers and arresting anyone suspected of intending to commit crime helped Merseyside avoid a third night of riots, police said. A total of 24 further arrests were made overnight for violent disorder, possession of weapons, drugs, burglary and car theft. Police said they intend to publish CCTV images of riot suspects later. Violence and looting spread across Wavertree, Birkenhead and Bootle on Monday and Tuesday. Twenty-five men aged between 15 and 42, arrested earlier in the week, have been charged.

Nine arrests in Coventry's Cheylesmore disorder

Nine people have been arrested after a car was set alight and officers came under attack in part of Coventry on Tuesday night. Officers said a parked car was set on fire and a petrol bomb was thrown in the Daventry Road area of Cheylesmore at about 22:30 BST. The nine people were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder. West Midlands Police said it was the only serious public disorder incident reported in Coventry on Tuesday night.

Wiltshire woman, 71, dies after being hit by lorry

A 71-year-old woman has died in hospital after she was hit by a lorry in Wiltshire. The accident happened at 16:04 BST on Tuesday at Foxham, near Chippenham. A Wiltshire Police spokesman said the woman had been walking close to the Volvo lorry, which was manoeuvring slowly, when the collision happened. She was taken to Great Western Hospital in Swindon by air ambulance where she died. The lorry driver, a 44-year-old man from the Devizes area, was unhurt. Officers are investigating.

Southampton teenager 'sorry' for Facebook riot messages

An 18-year-old from Southampton has apologised for setting up a page on Facebook appearing to organise a riot in the city. He was held overnight on Tuesday on suspicion of attempting to incite violence. He was released without charge when police were sure "his intention was not to cause a riot" and he apologised for his "stupid and immature" actions. Police have also warned against copycat anti-social behaviour.

England riots: Man accused of web incitement

Police have charged a 27-year-old man with allegedly using social media to incite criminal damage and burglary. Nathan Sinden, of St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, was arrested on Wednesday by police investigating reports that Facebook posts had encouraged disorder. He will appear at Hastings Magistrates' Court later charged with "intentionally encouraging/assisting" the commission of burglary and criminal damage". Mr Sinden is one of hundreds charged after days of riots across England. A number of people have been arrested on suspicion of using social media to incite disorder. Among them are a 17-year-old Luton boy, three Essex teenagers and two Kent teenagers.

Man attacked with concrete slab in Uckfield

A man was hit around the head with a concrete slab during a violent robbery in East Sussex. Police said the 47-year-old was assaulted as he walked in Hunters Way, Uckfield, at 16:20 BST on Monday. Officers said two men grabbed the victim around the neck, pushed him to the ground and struck him around the side of the face. The two men took money from the man and ran off. Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Riots: Quieter night in Leicester despite 19 arrests

Police in Leicestershire have said there were no incidents of disorder overnight, despite 19 arrests. Extra officers were deployed in the city centre on Wednesday after windows were smashed on Tuesday night. Youths were also interviewed and told to remove face coverings and get off bicycles or leave the area. A 15-year-old boy has been charged with possessing an offensive weapon while other arrests were mostly for public order offences or criminal damage. The ages of those arrested on Wednesday night ranged from 14 to 51.

Cleveland Chief Constable Sean Price denies corruption

A chief constable at the centre of a corruption probe has said he is "entirely innocent" of any wrongdoing. Cleveland's suspended top officer Sean Price, who is on bail along with his deputy Derek Bonnard, said he was confident he would be cleared. The pair, along with former force solicitor Caroline Llewellyn, were arrested as part of an investigation being conducted by Warwickshire Police. Mr Price said "serious questions" remained over the way he was arrested. In his first public statement since his arrest, released through his lawyers Kingsley Napley, Mr Price described how he was arrested in the early hours of 3 August. He said: "I have spent my entire career fighting crime, and a few days ago found myself on the other side of the fence with officers knocking at my door at 6am to arrest me.

Cleveland Police close social network account

A social network account has been closed down by Cleveland Police as part of a clampdown on potential disorder. In the wake of problems in other cities, the force has pledged to tackle the issue "robustly". A spokesman said that there had been no linked incidents in the area, but officers were aware of postings on various social networking sites. These were being monitored, and action taken in respect of some activity, with one account shut down.

Riot police from forces in the North sent to London

Officers from the North of England have been deployed to support the policing operation in London. The Northumbria, Durham, Cleveland, and North Yorkshire forces have sent public order trained officers to the capital. No numbers have been released, but all forces said contingency plans were in place to ensure enough resources were available locally. Cumbria Police said about 30 officers were on standby to offer support to other areas if needed.
